If you haven't guessed by the file name, my DJ alter ego is 2Dollar (in tribute of the prices at Greenpoint's The Thing). All of my mixes are done simply, with a feed going out of my mixer to my computer, where CoolEdit captures it. Since they're meant to be demos (of sorts), I do all the mixing by hand (with some rehearsal before, mostly to figure out where to drop the tracks). But because you can get away with less on tape than in a club/bar, I occasionally re-take and overdub if I majorly fuck up. That's not saying there aren't mistakes in here ("Two of Hearts" mauls "The Last Train Again" for a bit -- damn live drums), but I do try to make my mixes as streamlined for home listening as possible.
I'm aware of the debt Mixed Up in the Gay owes to I-F's Mixed Up in the Hague ("Dirty Talk," "Shari Vari" and, duh, the title) and Jeff Mills' Choice comp ("Dance to the Beat" and "Thanks To You"). I'm usually not this wide-ranging in sound, and the caustic stretch toward the end is new for me, too (I usually like things lite and peppy).
Oh, and though I'm embracing the music's (and my) gayness, don't think that this is my peak in that realm: I left off RuPaul, Uncanny Alliance and A Bitch Named Johanna. I'll have to remember to include them on Mixed Up in the Gay Vol 2: Butt Invaders.
"Two Of Hearts!" My God, I had nearly forgotten . . .

If you have to do it, you might as well do it right.

Kirstens pain in her eyes on clip 8 is intense. Her body language speaks volumes. It shows how shocked and disapointed she is in him and his stupid comments.
