I watched this movie the other night. Needless to say, it was very difficult to watch what Anna went through in the end with the repeated beatings. In the scene where she willingly eats the green slop after repeatedly having spit it out in earlier scenes, I knew that her spirit had finally broken and that she was resigned to accepting whatever these sick people were going to do to her.

My friend who watched it with me was like "Why doesn't she say anything to them?"

The irony of course is that Anna did try to save one of them, though she did not know the woman was one of them at the time.

I got this for christmas and only got around to watching it last night . I dont know if it like it , I dont think it was made to be liked . I think i was most freaked out but the victim that Anna found in the cell and didnt expect Anna to be skinned . I was like "What the fuck ? now thats it for her , Shes got no fucking skin you bastards !" but i guess thats the point when you realise is totally hopeless to think your going to get a happy ending . It did also remind me of V for vendetta and i got it into my head that it could be a mental trick to make her just "let go" When she did "let go" the ending of the film "Brazil" springs to mind , Martyrs did have a very different feeling to it though . I think she told the Mademoiselle that she saw heaven but none of them would go there because they're all sick sadistic bastards and to give her the fucking skin back . Did they just leave her in that jelly stuff ? she was still alive when the film ended i guess . I wonder what became of her.

my interp of the ending was that there was no afterlife, and that Anna saw nothing. Mademoiselle killed herself after realizing her lifes work of attrocities were in vein, and she was not looking forward to admitting this to room full of followers... as for keep doubting... im not sure what she meant there

Beautiful piece, as lovely as she was. Great tribute on what would have been her birthday.
