My favorite Whitney is defensive Whitney (Nippy has bite!), and so I love this clip from her 1999 MTV All Access special that someone truly wonderful recently put in my hands. In it, John Norris asks her about her performance at New York's pride festivities in 1999 and, in light of the longstanding rumors about Whitney's own sexuality, she immediately differentiates her pride (for being a mother and a wife and a daughter and a sister and a lover and a friend) from gay pride. OK! We get it! You are everything in the world aside from gay, Whitney!
Her tone is otherwise of reciprocal appreciation. The footage of her freaking out on house remixes of "It's Not Right But It's Okay" and "Heartbreak Hotel" in front of a throng of rapturous gays is hilarious. The best supporting performance award goes to her non-supporting belt.
Happy Pride, whatever it is that you're proud of.

Your pride is NOT her pride
That is right!

Wherever Whitney Houston goes, she sees love: in God, in Michael Jackson, in shoes, in moisturiser, in "us".

I hate the fact that Krista was on about I don't see any black women like me out there.. I wanna represent no girl, you just wanna win, don't lie!! And there are tnpley of beautiful black women out there. Krista was ugly, whether she was thin or not. She didn't have the best photos, she often looked a little drag. And Angelea, I don't even know why that girl was in the competition. I loved Jessica, she never took a bad picture and she had a good walk. Alasia was also particularly good, with a bt more help and work she would have done well.
